NEED TO GET AN APPOINTMENT SOONER?

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a specialized form of physiotherapy prescribed to treat and improve the symptoms caused by vestibular disorders. It often involves manual head manoeuvres and/or a progressive program of exercises designed to reduce vertigo and dizziness, visual issues, and/or imbalance and falls.

After an injury to the vestibular system occurs, the central nervous system can compensate for reduced function of the inner ears. Essentially, the brain copes with the imbalanced signals coming from the vestibular system by learning to rely more heavily on alternative signals coming from other systems in the body to maintain vestibular balance. This can be achieved through various exercise strategies outlined below. When this central (or brain) compensation occurs, the patient’s symptoms can be alleviated and allows them to return to normal function.

**What Types of Problems Benefit From VRT?**
Patients typically referred for Vestibular Rehabilitation have been diagnosed with a vestibular condition including:

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Vestibular Neuritis/Labyrinthitis
Unilateral Vestibular Hypofunction (UVH)
Vestibular Migraine
Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD)
Mal de Debarquement (MdDS)
Cervicogenic Dizziness
Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS)
Meniere’s Disease
Neurological conditions (i.e. stroke, traumatic brain injury)
Vestibular deconditioning from aging or inactivity
and many other vestibular conditions….

Elliott believes that physiotherapy should be holistic in nature, considering the impacts of physical injury on a patient’s work- and social-life. Physiotherapists should seek to provide patients with the clinical expertise to aid in the rehabilitation of current injuries, while also empowering patients through education. In doing so, physiotherapists are able to help in the prevention of re-injury enabling patients to continue pursuing the activities that are meaningful to them.

Despite having retired from competitive international competition, Elliott still enjoys pushing his mental and physical limits. Elliott is currently competing in off-road triathlon and looking to qualify for the World Championships in Italy. Outside of competition-related training, Elliott can often be found enjoying all that the pacific northwest has to offer. From backcountry skiing and surfing in the winter, to mountain biking, trail running and rock climbing in the summer, Elliott finds he feels most like himself when he is out in the elements. If you happen to be out in the North Shore trails keep your eyes peeled for Elliott and his two dogs Quinn and Kaia

Dr. Elna Johnson (Formerly Dr. Muñoz) utilizes her knowledge gained by her numerous degrees, certifications, and professional experiences, to assess the way your body moves. She strongly believes that by focusing on biomechanics (human movement), you are able to determine the issues that are causing the issues. Her experience both professionally and as a former elite athlete has shown her that focusing on the site of pain is the most common way to overlook the cause of the issue. This consequently almost never provides a solution to your issue(s). Her focus is to ensure that all parts of your body are moving optimally, in order to be able to perform pain-free and at its best.

Optimal Performance Clinic’s approach to care allows us to diagnose the cause of your injuries, and get you back to doing what you love to do. Over the last 15+ years, this successful approach to care has given Dr. Elna the opportunity to have worked with numerous professional and Olympic athletes and teams. She has had the privilege to work directly with and/or as a consult to teams in the CFL, NFL, NHL, UBC Football, UBC Track and Field, and Athletics Canada – our Canadian Track and Field Team. She has also had the opportunity to work on numerous movie sets, directly with various Hollywood actors/actresses, stuntmen/women, as well as with professional singers, performers and dancers.
